Parents Guide for Kids- Portraits Made Simple
Tips for Keeping Kids Happy During the Session
Capture Connection, Not Perfection:
Photos that tug at the heartstrings aren’t the ones with forced smiles. They’re the authentic moments while walking, interacting, and playing. Focus on interaction- like walking hand in hand, laughing, swinging kids up, or just being funny. Candid, joyful moments feel real because they are.
Dress for Comfort:
Choose a color palette 3-5 tones that compliment each other so each person feels comfortable. Choose soft fabrics and avoid stiff fabrics, or shoes that pinch or slip. Avoid anything that is itchy or uncomfortable.
Tips for keeping Kids Happy during the session. Gentle direction, not forced Posing:
Let kids be kids, curiosity is welcome.
Movement is encouraged. Walking, sitting, snuggling, & playing will often lead to the most genuine images. Children photograph best when they can move freely.
Breaks are welcome and to be expected. Kids may need a snack break or a moment to rest.
Plan ahead & Let it go:
The day before your session lay out your outfits (including shoes & accessories). Remove tags & steam clothes, and don’t forget to pack snacks, wipes, & water for the kids
Kids photos-Capture the moments that matter most
Kids photos are time capsules of your everyday love, laughter, growth spurts, messy giggles, and all the tiny details you’ll want to remember forever. As parents, you want more than a stiff, posed shot. You want warmth, real smiles, personality, and authenticity.
Dress for Comfort + Cohesion - Not Matching Uniforms
Instead of everyone wearing the exact same shade (yawn), choose a color palette (three tones that complement each other) so each person feels comfortable and the group looks coordinated without being “matchy matchy.” Think autumn earth tones, light neutrals, or cheerful spring pastels. Choose soft fabrics, neutral shoes or bare feet.
Children photograph best when they can move freely. Movement is encouraged. Walking, sitting, snuggling, and playing often leads the the most genuine and authentic images.
Tip: Lay outfits out together beforehand to see how they look side by side — it helps avoid last-minute clashing colors.
Props that Keep Kids Happy: Consider adding simple props that photograph beautifully. These ideas can help kids relax without distracting from the photos. Some great additions include: Neutral picnic blankets, wooden stools or crates, & small bubbles. Shop photo Props I love
