What to Wear for family Photos

Styling for portraits isn’t about being “matchy” (wearing the exact same outfit), but about choosing colors and textures that complement one another. Getting dressed for family photos doesn’t have to be stressful or expensive! With a little planning and the right neutrals and textures, your whole crew will look coordinated, camera-ready, and confident.

Start with a color palette. The biggest mistake families make is wearing identical outfits. Instead, choose 3-5 coordinating colors and mix textures.

Photographer favorite Color Palettes:

  • Cream, tan, soft blue, olive

  • Navy, gray, blush, white

  • Rust, mustard, denim, ivory

Clothing staples for Family Photos:

  • Women- flowy neutral dresses, knit sweaters, midi skirts

  • Men- Henley long sleeve shirts, button-downs (solid or subtle texture, neutral chinos, dark denim

  • Kids- soft fabrics (avoid stiff tulle or shiny materials), neutral knits, barefoot or neutral shoes

Shoes matter more than you think, Best Styles:

  • neutral ankle boots, leather sandals, simple sneakers (clean & solid color)

Add Texture with Layers and Accessories, layers add visual interest without clutter:

  • Denim jackets

  • Cardigans

  • Scarves

  • Simple jewelry

Favorite Family Photo Props:

  • Neutral picnic blankets

  • Wooden stools

  • Bubbles for kids
